Do You Have to
Be Fit to Surf?
Short version: no, you really don't. Surfing is a skill way more than a fitness test, the lessons are built for total beginners, and everything else is yours to dial up or down. Here is the honest take on what you actually need, what is optional, and why no one gets left behind.
No. You do not have to be fit or athletic. Surfing is a skill more than a fitness test, lessons are beginner-friendly, and everything else is scalable. You can push hard or take it easy, and no one gets left behind. It is about showing up, not being the fittest person there.
How Hard Is It Really?
Here is what a typical day looks like, how demanding each part actually is, and whether you can sit it out. No spin.
| The activity | How hard is it really On a SYB trip | Can you opt out? |
|---|---|---|
| Learning to surf | Beginner-friendly. A skill, not a strength test. Soft boards, white water, instructors right beside you | It is the main event, but you set the pace and rest whenever |
| Morning workouts | Fully optional. Encouraged, never required, and scaled to your level | Yes. Sleep in or sip coffee on the deck, zero guilt |
| Yoga | All levels. Easier and harder options for every pose, no experience needed | Yes, but most people love it for loosening up after surf |
| Hikes & adventures | Choose your own pace. Usually an easier route and a longer one | Yes. Pick the chill version or skip it for the beach |
| Boat / beach day | As easy as it gets. Swim, snack, sunbathe, repeat | This is the rest, not the work. Do as little as you like |
| Nightlife | Social, not sweaty. Drinks, dinners, dancing if you want | Yes. Big night or early night, both are completely normal |
What Fitness You Actually Need
Here is the truth almost nobody tells you: the bar is way lower than the Instagram reels make it look. You need basic mobility, the kind you use walking around a city, and a willingness to try. That is genuinely it. You do not need a six-pack, you do not need to run marathons, and you absolutely do not need to look a certain way or change your body before you book. If you can get yourself to the beach, you can do this. Fitness is a daily part of every trip, but it is optional and scalable. See how it works on our fitness travel guide.
Surfing rewards patience and balance far more than raw strength, and the muscles it uses are muscles you build by, well, surfing. First-timers are often shocked at how quickly their body catches up over a week. You paddle a little, you pop up, you wipe out, you laugh, you go again. The fitness comes as you go, not before you arrive. Showing up is the qualification.
No One Gets Left Behind
This is the part we are proudest of, and it is the thing our travelers mention again and again in reviews. The leaders read the group and adjust to you, not the other way around. Every activity is a choose-your-own-intensity situation: go all in on the workout or skip it, take the long hike or the short one, surf all morning or call it after a few good waves. Whatever you choose, someone has your back and you are never the person holding everyone up.
A huge slice of our people arrive a little nervous that they are not athletic enough, and a huge slice of those same people leave saying it was the best week of their year. That is not an accident. It is the whole design. Welcoming at any level is not a tagline for us, it is the actual experience, which is part of why 55% of travelers come back.
If You're Nervous, Read This
If part of you is reading this thinking "sounds amazing, but I'd be the unfit one," breathe. That worry is completely normal, and it is also wrong about how these trips work. Most people show up solo, a little unsure, and not knowing a soul. By day two they have a crew, an inside joke, and a wave they are weirdly proud of. Being a beginner is the default here, not the exception.
Nobody is watching, scoring, or comparing. There is no fittest-person leaderboard. The people who get the most out of the week are not the most athletic ones, they are the ones who show up open and say yes. If that can be you, you are already more than ready. Everything else is handled: the lessons, the gear, the food, the logistics, the crew. You just bring yourself.
Is This You?
A quick, honest read on whether a surf retreat is your kind of week.
You'll be totally fine if…
- You can walk around a city without it wrecking you
- You are up for trying something new and a little goofy
- You want to push hard some days and chill on others
- You like the idea of leaving with a crew, not just photos
Just know going in…
- Surfing involves paddling, falling, and getting back up
- You will probably be pleasantly sore, in a good way
- The workouts and yoga are there, but only if you want them
- The more you say yes, the more you get out of it
"I was so worried I wasn't fit enough. By day two I'd stopped thinking about it. The leaders met everyone where they were and no one got left behind."
Fitness & Surf Retreat FAQ
Do I have to be fit to go on a surf retreat?
No. You do not have to be fit or athletic to enjoy a surf retreat. Surfing is a skill far more than a fitness test, lessons are built for total beginners, and everything else on the trip is scalable. You can push hard or take it easy, and the leaders adjust to you so no one gets left behind. It is about showing up, not being the fittest person there.
Do I need surf experience to go?
No. Surf lessons are built for beginners, and most people on the trip have never stood on a board before. Instructors start you in the white water on soft, forgiving boards and walk you through every step. Plenty of first-timers are popping up and riding waves by the end of the week.
Are the morning workouts mandatory?
No. Morning workouts are encouraged, not required. They are there if you want to feel good and get the blood moving, and they scale to your level. Some people go all in, some take it easy, and plenty sleep in or sip coffee on the deck. Nobody is checking attendance.
I have never done yoga, is that ok?
Yes, totally. The yoga is all levels and the instructors offer easier and harder options for every pose, so you can go as gently as you like. You do not need to touch your toes or know a single pose name. It is there to help you stretch out and feel good after surfing, not to test you.
What if I can't keep up?
You will be fine. The leaders adjust the pace to the group and to you, every activity has an easier option, and you can opt out of anything any time. Choose your own intensity is the whole philosophy, and no one gets left behind. People who worried they were too out of shape end up having the time of their lives.
What is the age range?
Travelers are mostly in their late 20s to early 40s, with plenty in their 50s too. But age is not really the point. The trips draw a curious, up-for-it, friendly crowd, and mindset matters far more than the number on your ID or your fitness level.
