sybfinlandexperienceoverview

Huskies, reindeer, snowmobiles, and a sky that goes green.

This is the Arctic with the volume all the way up. You wake up in a wood lined room in Saariselka village, 250 km above the Arctic Circle, and spend the day driving your own snowmobile across frozen lakes, running a husky team through the forest, and out on the fells with Sami reindeer herders. At night the sky goes green and you watch it from a fire camp, then get in the sauna, run out into the snow, and go straight back in. Full board, every activity, every transfer, and 21 other people who came for exactly this.

Trip Notes

Arrival, Friday 19 March. Aim to land at Ivalo (IVL) by 15:30. Our transfer leaves the airport at 16:00 and pulls up at the hotel around 16:45, in time for gear fitting and the welcome dinner at 19:00.

Land earlier and there is a midday run at 11:30. Land later and there is a final pickup at 21:30. Either way you are covered, but the 16:00 is the one to aim for.

Departure, Wednesday 24 March. The shuttle leaves the hotel at 09:30 for Ivalo airport. Do not book anything departing Ivalo before 11:30.

The drive is about 35 minutes each way and both transfers are included.

Fly into Ivalo, airport code IVL. Not Rovaniemi, not Kittila.

Almost everyone routes through Helsinki (HEL) on Finnair, and Helsinki to Ivalo is about an hour and a half. From the US that usually means an overnight flight into Helsinki, then north.

Connect in Helsinki the same day and land at Ivalo by 15:30. Meet us at Ivalo airport and we pick you up.

Wait for your confirmation email before you buy anything. Then send us the flight and we will line you up with the rest of the crew on the same transfer.

Plans change, we get it. Cancel more than 45 days before the trip starts and 100 percent of what you have paid, deposit included, becomes trip credit you can use toward any SYB trip within 12 months.

To reserve your spot, a 20 percent deposit is required. It goes toward your total, and the remaining balance is due 2 February 2027, about six weeks before we go. You can also spread it out on an instalment plan at checkout.

If you cancel within 45 days of departure, your payment is non refundable and non transferable. No exceptions, and we do not offer cash refunds for any reason.

Travel and medical insurance is required, and you must secure it before joining the trip. In the Arctic it is not optional in spirit either. Worth it.

Saariselka, a small fell village in Finnish Lapland, roughly 250 km above the Arctic Circle and 35 minutes from Ivalo airport. It sits on the edge of Urho Kekkonen National Park, one of the largest protected wildernesses in Europe.

This matters for one reason above all others: there is almost no light pollution and we are sitting directly under the aurora oval. March is statistically one of the best months of the year for it.

The village itself has a ski centre, a toboggan hill, a bowling alley and a handful of bars, all walkable.

Wilderness Hotel Kieppi, for all five nights. One bed, no packing and repacking.

Rooms are wood lined and warm, with a window onto the snow. A shared spot is a twin Wilderness Room. At checkout you pick a girls spot or a boys spot, and we pair you with someone else from the group. A private spot is the same room with nobody else in it.

The hotel has its own restaurant, bar and saunas, and the activity guides work out of the same building. You will not be commuting to your own holiday.

Yes. Full board from the welcome dinner on arrival to breakfast on departure day. Breakfast, lunch and dinner every day, plus hot drinks and soup out on the activity days, which you will care about more than you expect at minus 15.

Alcohol is not included. Neither is anything you buy on the bar crawl night, which is on you and worth it.

Exactly what it sounds like. We take the sauna over for the night, get properly hot, run out into the snow, and go straight back in. Then again.

It is the single best thing you can do to your body after a day on a sled, it is completely normal here, and it is the night everybody remembers. Swimwear on, drinks in hand.

Yes, if you want to. They are optional and sit outside the package, so you pay for them on the day.

Frozen Ring is a 570 metre ice karting track with 11 corners, right in Saariselka village. The toboggan run at Ski Saariselka is the longest in Finland: chairlift up Kaunispaa fell, sled back down. The ticket is about 58 euros with the lift, sled and helmet.

Tell your leaders you are in and we will make time for both on Day 4, the free day, or another afternoon if the weather moves things around.

Usually somewhere around minus 5 to minus 20 Celsius in March, and it is a dry cold rather than a wet one. It bites less than the number suggests.

The hotel hands you a full thermal overall, proper winter boots and gloves on arrival, so you are not buying an Arctic wardrobe for one week.

You bring: warm base layers (wool or synthetic, not cotton), wool socks, a hat, a buff or balaclava for your face, sunglasses, swimwear for the sauna, lip balm, and a power bank. Cold kills phone batteries fast.

The currency is the euro, and Finland is close to cashless. Cards and phone payments work everywhere, including the village bars and the hotel.

Bring a small amount of cash if you like having it, but you will not need much. Budget for drinks, the bar crawl night and any souvenirs from the village. A beer runs somewhere around 8 to 10 euros.

Tell your bank you are travelling so your card does not get blocked on day one.

Very. Finland is consistently one of the safest countries on earth, and Saariselka is a tiny village where nothing much happens except weather.

Every activity runs with Wilderness Hotels guides, their equipment and a proper briefing before you touch a snowmobile. They have been guiding up here for decades.

The cold is the only real hazard, and the gear plus the guides handle it. Listen to them and you are fine.

Twenty two spots plus your SYB leaders.

Expect a roughly even split of men and women, most of them travelling solo, most in their late twenties to mid forties. Social, curious, up for a full day outside and a long dinner after it.

Small enough that you know every name by the second night. Big enough that somebody is always up for one more sauna round.

Yes, and most people do. Roughly three out of four spots go to someone booking on their own.

Between the sled days, the sauna and five dinners at the same long table, the group forms fast. By day two nobody remembers who came with who.

Book a shared spot, choose girls or boys at checkout, and we pair you with someone from the group. Or take a private spot and keep the room to yourself.

Yes. We shoot the whole week and send the gallery afterwards.

Which matters more here than anywhere else we go. At minus 15 you do not want to be the person holding a phone up all day, and the light in an Arctic March is the best you will ever be photographed in.

Physically, yes. Nothing on this trip needs training. You sit on a snowmobile, you stand behind a sled, you walk in snowshoes. The hardest physical thing you will do all week is getting the snowsuit on.

What it does ask for is a decent attitude toward cold and dark. Days are short, the sky does what it wants, and some of the best moments happen standing still outside at 22:00 waiting for it.

If that sounds good rather than miserable, you can handle it.
