New Years Eve 2024
New Years Eve 2024
Your flight needs to arrive before 2pm at Managua or Liberia International Airport to make the SYB bus transfers to Playa Maderas from Managua (2 1/2 hours) or Liberia (3 1/2 hours).
We'll get to know each other and our amazing location. Dinner is served at 9pm, dancing is rampant, lights go low, and the disco balls come out. Where this night takes you is your story. This is just day 1.
WORKOUT AND SURF
Get ready to experience SYB to its fullest. We begin with wake-up calls, more on this later, and go straight into morning workouts, beach games, a dip in the ocean to clean up, and a hearty breakfast, all before it's even 9am.
We'll take a chill moment to soak everything by the pool and later head to the beach for surf lessons, tacos, a cold beer, and many good laughs with your new friends. Save some energy for an epic sunset yoga session and then to our open bar happy hour by the pool!
This is the night we head into town for dinner as a group on SYB, you just bring some money for the shots and dancing shoes, or wait, it's a beach town; shoes are unnecessary!
We take in a full morning of workouts, then make our way to the marina for a day on a catamaran. This is truly one of the highlights of this trip as we head to a white sand beach to snorkel, enjoy fresh food on the boat and enjoy drinks sailing into the sunset.
Dinner will be at our spot. Believe us, we've earned this grub today!
SURF YOGA BEER
Similar to yesterday, just different workouts. After breakfast, we walk down the beach to our surf lessons part two. Today we focus on surfing, and anything water-related! Options for a more serious workout include a group trail run and circuit training at the jungle gym.
We head back to our house yoga deck overlooking that same ocean and enjoy a sunset yoga session. This is where the magic happens. Some of us will probably just enjoy the sunset with delicious drinks in hand.
We'll be visiting SJDS today, where we'll explore the famous Jesus statue and local shops, and dinner will be on your own in town. It's a good time to do some shopping if you're into that kinda thing.
Sleep in, friends; we know last night was crazy. We'll start the day a little slower to conserve some energy for the big night. But once we start, we don't stop - morning workouts, surf, pool time, sunset viewing deck yoga, and for our last night of 2022 we're dressing up in all white!
Expect a fancy dinner overlooking the water, a huge bonfire and of course fireworks for the big countdown!
We'll wake up to a new year and new habits! We'll give you some time to recover but then straight into our workouts, yoga, and saltwater ocean therapy! We'll do some life reflection exercises to help set the right path for a new year!
As the sun drops, we pull out the yoga mats to stretch our sore bodies and take our practice to a deeper level...this is where the magic truly happens.
This is our last night, so we'll do our awards, feast together, and take it out with a bang!
BACK TO REALITY
Everyone will be checking out at 8am and taking the SYB van to Managua airport, so choose a departure flight after noon.
Until next time... or until we throw our next party because this friendship just started!

NIC NYE 🤍 Rang in 2022 with beautiful new friends in a beautiful new place. A week of laughs, tears, friendships, movement, growth and memories to last a lifetime…. But I’ll pass on the missing luggage. Just a few more posts to come… #SYBNICARAGUA Sending love for a happy and healthy new year to all the special people in my life! 📸: @markharrison4 @gregtravers_ @grace__steel
✨STORY TIME ✨ Over a year ago, I decided that I wanted to start my year off fresh and do a yoga retreat for New Years Eve. The one I came across was going to be in Nicaragua, but my timing was wayyy off. It was around the time of the Covid surge, I was going to a country I’ve never been to before and I was going to go by myself…my parents, rightfully so, begged me not to go so I canceled. 1 year later, I remembered that a friend (@alanac11 ) had mentioned the company @surfyogabeer and I decided to check them out. Funny enough, I came across the New Years Eve trip in…Nicaragua! My financials weren’t great and my parents were still uncomfortable so what did I do? I paused my plans once again and considered not to go. Then one day I woke up and decided that sometimes you need to not think and just do and I’m so glad that I did. Almost a week from today, I traveled alone to a country I’ve never been, with people I’ve never met, and went on a week long yoga retreat which is something I’ve never done. Each day was filled with workouts, yoga, surfing, and best of all, friendship. In just one week I met some of the most amazing people I’ve ever met, dove deeper into who I am and who I want to be, got clarity on the things I want to see change and the things I want to accomplish in my life, and it allowed me to reflect on the continuation of one of the hardest years I’ve had internally. Sometimes it might not make sense, but if it feels right, take that chance. I am so grateful for this experience and I’m so excited to see more, live more, love more, and to risk more. Thank you SYB for this amazing experience, truly.
It’s not unusual for me that a one-week trip turned into three weeks, and it wasn’t hard to do, considering HOW MUCH FUN this adventure was. I’m so grateful to have the ability right now to pick up and go (or stay) without having to worry about much else. I know that won’t be a forever thing, but for now, I am soaking it all in. Inspired by an action-packed, super-fun, enlightening adventure with @surfyogabeer, I dedicate this piece to all of the amazing new friends I made over the last three weeks. #SurfYogaBeer #SYBNicaragua #travel #SYBRemote #Nicaragua
PLAYA MADERAS, NICARAGUA 🏄♀️🧘♀️🍻🥲 Surf. Yoga. Beer. Tears. Candle light dinner. Face mask. Workouts(tons). Movement. Stillness. Quietness. Reflection. Disco night. 1 run. Music. Unsureness. Observing. Excitement. Boat day. ATVs. Jungle gym. Birds chirping. Monkeys. Unicorn sign. Vulnerability. Late nights. Early mornings. Toña. Slack line. Sunrise. Jelly fish. Sunsets. Beach games. Competitiveness. Sore. Straw-like-hair. Pushing my body. Espresso martinis. New year. Daily meditation streak going 👏🏼. Boat day. Intimidated. Inspired. Encouraged. Optimistic. Awakened. Being surrounded with such accomplished, confident, beautiful, strong, badass( + more) group left me inspired and helped me realize some of the intentions I want to have for this year — all while allowing me to realize I need to start sharing more pieces of myself. But the biggest lesson of them all and a reoccurring theme that stuck with me was that to let in, you need to LET GO. When I booked this trip, I was probably at the lowest point I’ve been in some years(going through life shit as we all do, taking mental health days cause literally could not work, struggling to find a therapist etc.), and was unsure how I would feel when the time for this trip came. Grateful to have closed off 2021 with @surfyogabeer in Nicaragua.. and looking forward to my next trip! 🌟 #YouAreExactlyWhereYouShouldBe 📸🎥 @grace__steel @markharrison4 @gregtravers_ #sybnicaragua
Thank you, surf yoga beer, for affording me the opportunity to experience the most memorable and re-energizing adventure of my life. Although only spending 1 week together, I felt like I've known this group of amazing people forever, and the bonds we made will last for years to come.
Just last week I was with the SYB @surfyogabeer fam in Nicaragua with an amazing group of friends toasting for NYE. 🥂🥂 I’m so grateful to the Surf Yoga Beer community. This trip has recharged me and set me for success with great new healthy habits for 2022. Lets go 2022! #dontthinkjustdo #LFG. 📸@gregtravers_
💗💗💗 I’ve thought about going on a fitness or yoga retreat for maybe 5 years now 👉🏻I never signed up because I was always nervous to go alone not knowing anyone... I finally signed up for my first @surfyogabeer trip this summer thanks to @whatleahloves. If you’re thinking of signing up for a fitness or yoga retreat alone DO. IT. Trust me 😜 You’ll meet some truly amazing people.
This is a brief chronicle of my week with @surfyogabeer in Nicaragua for NYE ‘23. I was going to wait until some of the more professional photos found their way to me, but I can’t & I won’t hold back any more. The word I selected in our New Years exercise was “unleash”, so here goes: I have a lot to say. This trip was a shock to the spiritual system; a much-needed defibrillator for the soul filled with joy & laughter, shared with some of the most beautiful people I’ve met in my entire life. And I still say that a few days out now that the initial glow has worn off. I wish I had taken more photos of you all, but I was too enraptured by the moment most times and I had faith that our collective photography would capture the moments worth savoring. I never dreamed I would’ve felt so at home in a foreign place with a group of strangers. The community that this trip fostered will truly never be duplicated — because it can’t be. These moments will never exist again, and for the moments they were: I’m glad we spent them with one another. Without getting into the whole “new year, new me” trope — this trip allowed me to turn a corner that I’d sought for quite some time. To stay on-brand: a wave that was forming under the surface that I could feel but never saw. It brought peace & love that I knew was possible but hadn’t felt in years. I’m not going to post the inside jokes or tag anyone in particular: you know who you are & if you were there I hope you’ll remember as I do. Because as beer-fueled and busy as the week was, it’s burned into my memory in a tender place where only I can reach it all; kept safe in the memory & only to be brought out at the right moments. If you’re still reading this — reach out to someone you love today. Then reach out to yourself: your shadow, the inner you, the piece of you that you may have forgotten or want to deny exists. And tell them that you love them too. They’re still there — I promise, and they’d love to hear from you. Until next time SYB (and there will be a next time): stay golden. I love you all for what we did together. #sybnicaragua #sybnye #surfyogabeer #spiritualjourney #loveyourself
Cheeky surf in the morn and I couldn’t be happier. 🏄🏻♀️ But also my arm won’t fit around the board 😂

Full NYE Guide
Fly into Liberia, Costa Rica, at Guanacaste International Airport (LIR) or Managua, Nicaragua, to Augusto C. Sandino International Airport (MGA). From there, we head to the beautiful Playa Maderas, where we will be for the duration of our time here!
San Juan del Sur is located on the island's southwest side, but just twenty minutes north, Playa Maderas boasts some of the world's most famous surfing. Playa Maderas is located on the island's Pacific side, surrounded by lush jungles to protect you from the mainland, cliff formations to the north, and other stunning beaches.
Once a tiny beach town fishing village, Playa Maderas has evolved into a peaceful and tranquil surfer's paradise.
The trip officially starts 6pm on Dec 27th. Don't worry we provide a few transportation shuttles to our villas!
We recommend you fly into Managua Airport (Augusto Cesar Sandino International Airport, MGA). A second option is Liberia, Costa Rica. We'll set up transportation shuttles according to where most people fly into. Please try to arrive to either of those airports by 2pm latest. Alternatively, we can connect you with trusted transportation services, they cost around $125-$200 per vehicle up to 4 people.
These are subject to change as we'll calculate everyone's flight times to make the best transfer schedule.
Departure is the same, we'll find out where most peoples flights are and take it from there! But try to book your flights earliest at 11am so that we have enough time to get you to the airport. We'll set up smaller shuttles to accompany everyone, unfortunately if you're earlier then 11am you'll need to pay for your own transportation (luckily there will be tons of people, and some who might be sharing your flight).
We'll ask you 6-weeks prior to the trip to 'check-in' within the booking account where we collect your flight info, passport info, etc.
We're taking over several hotels in Playa Maderas, Nicaragua. This is a remote beach town about 20 minutes away from San Juan Del Sur the closest port town.
Selina Maderas (Maderas 200mts north of Empalme Marsella San Juan del Sur, 48600, Nicaragua)
Villas Playa Maderas (10 Km north, San Juan del Sur 48600, Nicaragua)
This is the fun part, we typically get 4x4 gators which helps us get to the surf faster, but honestly, the beach is a 3-minute walk from our villas. Of course, we'll set up transport to and from the airport if you fly in on recommended flights, but we can even help arrange your private transfers with our trusted partners if needed.
In other words, we got you!
Every day we'll clean up after you...so feel free to enjoy yourself while on vacation!
We will provide breakfast and all but one dinner for the trip, but a few lunches won't be as we'll be exploring the town and local areas. So these days, it's up to what you're craving!
Alcohol is not included at restaurants outside the hotel, but impress your new friends and get bottle service for all!!
Walk just a few steps and get a taste of the local waves. We will provide two or three surf lessons for you to ride your first wave, or if you're a pro, perfect your form! With world-famous waves, you'll be eager to dip your toes in the water daily! This experience is included in trip fees.
The best days are days spent on a boat. We will take a private catamaran tour to see stunning white sand beaches, snorkel, and enjoy fresh foods!
This experience is included in trip fees.
After a late night, you may not want to wake up and join us for a workout, but we highly suggest it! Included in your trip, the boot camps and yoga sessions keep us energized - there is nothing better than waking up and sweating with your new friends! Our world-class trip leaders know how to start your day the best way, with a good workout to prime us for a day of adventuring.
This experience is included in trip fees.
No need to whip out your phone or camera at any point throughout this trip because we have got you covered. We will have a professional photographer and videographer joining us on this trip to capture every moment. These will be the best travel photos and videos you will ever get - you're friends better be ready for a photo dump out of their wildest dreams!!
This experience is included in trip fees.
We highly recommend you get travel and/or medical insurance. This is just for emergencies or unforeseen circumstances. If anything happens our leaders will take you to a hospital or clinic nearby.
We additionally offer a $25 insurance program called Nicaragua Medical Care for basic medical needs for an on-call doctor. If you select this extra upon check-out, our local doctor, Dr. Norlan, can arrive typically within 30min-1hour and provide basic to intermediate medical needs such as IV drip for dehydration, bites, cuts, stomach issues, etc. You may call him up to 3x with this extra option at no cost except for the medicine used.
We'll be doing some adventures throughout this trip that require a bit of self-awareness of the surrounding area. Remember, this is the jungle.
Dehydration is a common cause of feeling unwell. We require everyone to bring their own refillable water bottle and drink lots of water.
Avoid drinking too much alcohol. Of course, you will want to enjoy a few beers and try some of the local rum around the first night. However, don't make yourself a liability. Nobody wants to have to look after a drunk person. Tropical hangovers are a nightmare, and you don't want to miss out on daily activities if you are trying to recover from the night before!
Your skin will burn easily in the tropics, and especially ya'll winter hibernating New Yorkers. So get the proper gear and protection!
There have been no incidents that we've heard of or come across that would have us concerned. You are safe in the area and very safe if you stay with us; our accommodation is very secure and has several guards working 24/7.
DO NOT FLUSH ANY PRODUCTS, INCLUDING PAPER, DOWN THE TOILETS.
This is a third-world country, and the sewage is not the same as in the US. There are waste baskets next to the bathrooms. Please use those.
This is a tropical beach adventure, not a yoga retreat or luxury travel experience. But our property is very beautiful with very comfortable and clean rooms. Of course, as we're in the middle of the jungle, you'll have to watch for bugs and spiders. But, as long as you keep the doors shut, you should be good.
You can expect morning workouts, sunset yoga, beach run-throughs, and fitness games almost every day. We'll be pairing that with big group dinners, nights out in the town, and lots of dancing! But, of course, you can always take it at your own pace, skip workouts or adventures and stay back at the house.
We believe you can easily handle this adventure if you have an open mind and a sense of adventure!
The Cordoba is Nicaragua's currency. However, most establishments accept USD.
We suggest bringing about $300 to $400 to use at bars and a few of our dinners, but otherwise, we've got you covered! For reference, prices of alcoholic drinks range from $6 - $12 USD.
Playa Maderas has no ATMs, and most establishments will charge a 5-6% extra charge for car payments, so remember to withdraw your cash in your home country!
