Every Travel Hack Tuesday, collected. Our trip leaders on flights, bags, landings and the part nobody tells you about.
Every few weeks we hand the Instagram over to the people who actually run our trips and ask them one question: what is the thing you wish everyone knew before they got on the plane?
What comes back is never generic. It is specific, slightly unhinged, occasionally illegal-adjacent, and it works. So we pulled every Travel Hack Tuesday into one place and sorted it into the order you will actually need it.
Nineteen hacks, nineteen leaders, four chapters. Tap why it works on any card for the reason it earns its place.
01
THE AIRPORT GAME.
Everything that happens before you are allowed to relax.

01
GO INCOGNITO, THEN GO ABROAD.
Why it works
Airlines remember you. Incognito forgets you. Flip your VPN to another country and the same seat can quietly change price.
@meag_donnelly
02
ONE APP, EVERY GATE.
Why it works
Four airlines, one screen. And at the end of the year it hands you a map of everywhere you went, which is a dangerous thing to look at in January.
@lauren.24
03
BRIBE THE CREW, NICELY.
Why it works
A bag of candy costs four dollars. An empty row across the Atlantic is priceless. Steph has run this play on more long hauls than she will admit.
@stephcurrrie
04
FIND YOUR PEOPLE BEFORE THE GATE.
Why it works
This is the one that changes the trip. You land already knowing someone. Strangers to family starts at JFK, not at the villa.
@juliana.jpg02
THE BAG.
Nobody has ever come home and said they wish they packed more.

05
YOU ARE GOING TO WEAR A SWIMSUIT.
Why it works
Be honest about the trip you are actually taking. Nobody has ever unpacked in Nicaragua and thought, thank god I brought the blazer.
@courtneydcochran
06
PACK HALF, WEAR THE SWAG.
Why it works
Alex is standing in front of the pyramids with no shirt on, so consider the source, but he is right. Half of what is in your bag will come home unworn.
@alexpmarks
07
CARRY-ON IS KING.
Why it works
The group is already in the van. Be in the van. Carry-on is not about packing light, it is about not being the person everyone is waiting on.
@erinashsd
08
SWIMSUIT ON TOP.
Why it works
Sam films this stuff for a living, so he knows exactly how long it takes people to get in the water. Layer your bag in the order you will need it.
@sam_knollmeyer
09
THE BAG INSIDE THE BAG.
Why it works
SYB days run long. Boat, hike, beach, dinner, out. The little bag is what lets you say yes to all of it without going back to the room.
@carribres
10
ONE CLEAN OUTFIT, RIGHT ON TOP.
Why it works
You get off the plane in Costa Rica wearing the outfit you picked for a cold airport at 5am. Two minutes in a bathroom fixes the next four hours.
@sarahcatenac
11
THE JUST IN CASE KIT.
Why it works
Ibuprofen, immune stuff, and the one for the thing nobody wants to say out loud. It weighs nothing and it saves somebody on every single trip.
@kaiahollerback
12
WEAR YOUR LAUNDRY INTO THE SHOWER.
Why it works
The most unhinged hack on this list, and it is from the guy who carries 30 pounds of camera gear, so the man has clearly done the math. One outfit, shampoo, done.
@ryangreenfilms03
THE LANDING.
What separates a good trip from the one you talk about for a decade.

13
BEER ON LANDING, DOCTOR’S ORDERS.
Why it works
The third pillar, deployed at 9am local time. Not science. Extremely SYB. It also stops you going straight to the hotel bed and wrecking day one.
@rahmstagram
14
THIRTY MINUTES OF HOMEWORK.
Why it works
Half an hour of dead airport time buys you a week of better interactions. Say it badly. They will love you for trying.
@claber2
15
BOOK THE EXTRA DAYS.
Why it works
This is the hack that costs the most and pays the most. The trip ends and nobody is ready. The people who booked extra days are the ones still together on day nine.
@yesthisiseli
16
ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS.
Why it works
The least fun hack on the list and the one everybody wishes they had taken. Buy it when you book, not the night before.
@sbala51004
BEING THERE.
The three that have nothing to do with logistics.

17
TELL NOBODY WHERE YOU ARE GOING.
Why it works
No opinions, no someone-went-in-2019, no expectations built out of other people’s photos. You get the place raw, and the pictures do the talking when you are home.
@alexpmarks
18
PUT THE PHONE DOWN.
Why it works
There is a professional photographer on the trip whose entire job is this. You are not going to out-shoot them from a moving boat. Be in the moment, get the photos anyway.
@sbala510
19
SAY YES TO THE 6AM ONE.
Why it works
Nobody has ever come home and said they wish they had slept in. The wake-up lasts twenty minutes. The thing you got up for lasts a lot longer than that.
@dkaplan17THE PRE-FLIGHT CHECKLIST.
Everything above, turned into a list you can run the night before. Screenshot it, or just be a functional adult about it.
Carry-on only, or an AirTag in the checked bag
Swimsuit packed on top
One clean outfit in the carry-on
Packable tote or day backpack
Just in case kit: ibuprofen, immune, stomach
Flighty app downloaded, flights added
Travel insurance actually purchased
Snacks for the flight crew
Posted in the WhatsApp group to find flight buddies
Thirty minutes of language and culture homework
Told nobody where you are going
Extra days booked on the back end

THE ORIGINAL DROPS.
Every hack above came from one of these five Travel Hack Tuesday posts. Go say something nice to the leaders in the comments.
NOW GO USE THEM.
The hacks are free. The trip is the part where strangers turn into your group chat for the next four years.
