How to Travel the Amalfi Coast
Skip the buses, move by boat, and actually enjoy the most beautiful coastline in Italy.
Take it from us. The Amalfi Coast is everything Instagram promises, and somehow most people still do it the hard way: half the trip stuck on a bus winding around cliffs, sitting in traffic, hunting for parking. This guide is the opposite of that. It's how to spend your days in the water, in the towns, and at the table instead of in transit.
When is the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast?
The coast comes alive from late May through September. That's swimming season, boat season, and long-dinner season all at once. If you want warm water and golden evenings without the peak crush, go in June or September. The sea is warm, the light is unreal, and the towns are a little less packed than they are in August.
July and August are the hottest and busiest. Still gorgeous, but you'll share Positano with a lot of people and pay top-of-season prices. From about November through March most of the coast shuts down for winter, so keep your trip inside the warm months.
How do you get to the Amalfi Coast?
Fly into Naples International Airport (NAP). It's the closest major airport and the easiest way into the region. Positano, Amalfi, Sorrento, and the Capri boats are all within reach.
From Naples it's about 60 to 90 minutes down to the coast by car or private shuttle. You can stitch it together with trains and public ferries, but that's usually where people lose their first day to logistics. A transfer waiting at arrivals is the best money you'll spend. It turns travel day into "we're at the beach by lunch."
How do you get around the Amalfi Coast? (Read this twice)
This is the decision that makes or breaks an Amalfi trip. The famous coast road is narrow, twisty, and bumper to bumper in summer. Buses are slow and crowded. Driving yourself means white-knuckle hairpin turns and then circling for parking that doesn't exist.
The fix is simple. Travel by boat. Pull into Positano and Capri from the water and you skip the traffic completely. You see the coastline the way it's meant to be seen, from the sea looking up, and you anchor in hidden grottos and swim spots most road-trippers never even find.
- Boat for the big days: Positano, Amalfi, Capri, and the swim coves around Nerano.
- Walk the towns: once you're dropped off, every town is best on foot. Positano especially.
- Car or shuttle for inland: save the road for Pompeii and a Mount Vesuvius winery.

Where should you go on the Amalfi Coast?
Here's the short list that earns its spot, and what each place is actually for.
Positano
The postcard. Pastel houses stacked up the cliff, little boutiques, and patios built for a slow glass of prosecco. No tour guide needed. Get dropped off, wander the lanes at your own pace, find a terrace, and soak it in. Come by boat and you skip the worst of the crowds and the climb.
Amalfi Town
Yes, it's a real place, not just the name of the region. It's smaller and more laid-back than Positano: an iced coffee, easy streets, and a striking striped cathedral. Pair it with Positano on the same boat day. They go together.
Capri
Worth a full boat day on its own. Cruise out from the mainland, slip through the arches, and step off into luxury shops and that famous island glamour. One thing you can't skip: get to the top of the island. The view up there is the kind that gives you goosebumps.
Nerano & Conca del Sogno

This is the swim-and-play day. The Nerano area is home to legendary beach clubs, Conca del Sogno among them, where the plan is cliff jumping, Aperol in the sun, and clear water you'll want to stay in for hours. It's also the birthplace of spaghetti alla Nerano, so eat it where it was invented.
Pompeii & Mount Vesuvius

The one inland day worth leaving the water for. Pompeii is staggering, a whole Roman city frozen in time. From there you head to a winery at the base of Mount Vesuvius for a tasting and a long pasta lunch made with produce from the vineyard's own gardens. History in the morning, volcanic wine in the afternoon.
How many days do you need on the Amalfi Coast?
Five to seven days is the sweet spot. Any less and you're rushing the highlights. Much more and you'll want to branch out into the wider Campania region. A week gives every big experience its own day:
- Day 1, arrive and settle: land in Naples, transfer down, first dip in the sea, welcome dinner.
- Day 2, Positano & Amalfi: the big boat day to the two iconic towns.
- Day 3, beach club: Nerano, Conca del Sogno, cliff jumping.
- Day 4, Capri: a second boat day for grottos, shopping, and that summit view.
- Day 5, Pompeii & Vesuvius: history and a volcanic-winery lunch inland.
- Day 6, sunrise hike and a send-off dinner.
- Day 7, departure.
What should you eat and drink on the Amalfi Coast?

- Daily gelato. Not optional. Once a day, minimum.
- Aperol Spritz at golden hour, feet near the water.
- Limoncello. The after-dinner pour is basically a local handshake.
- Wood-fired pizza. You're a short hop from Naples, where pizza was born.
- Spaghetti alla Nerano, in (where else) Nerano.
- Volcanic wines off the slopes of Vesuvius, tasted at the source.
- Long lunches that turn into afternoons. That's the whole point. Don't rush the table.
Can you travel the Amalfi Coast solo?
Absolutely, and plenty of people do. Solo travel here is safe and easy. The catch is that the best parts (the private boat days, the hidden coves, the long group dinners) are simply more fun, and often cheaper per person, when they're shared. Between the morning workouts, the boat days, and the dinners that run late, you meet people fast. By a couple of days in it stops feeling like a tour and starts feeling like traveling with friends.
Amalfi without the friction
Everything above is how we'd tell a friend to do it. It's also how we run our own trip. We've been bringing crews to this coast since 2016 and we've quietly cut out every part that usually goes wrong. You move by boat instead of by bus, with full boat days to Positano, Amalfi, and Capri and the prosecco flowing on deck. Add Mediterranean workouts with ocean views, cliff jumping at Conca del Sogno, a hands-on pizza-making party, Pompeii with the funniest archaeologist on the coast, and a Black Tie by the Sea sunset party with a private DJ. A photographer and videographer come along too, so you can actually be present and still go home with the whole week on camera.
Amalfi Coast travel FAQ
What is the best way to travel the Amalfi Coast?
By boat. The coast road is narrow, slow, and jammed in summer, so reaching Positano and Capri from the water is faster, prettier, and far less stressful.
How many days do you need on the Amalfi Coast?
Five to seven days. That's enough for a day each in Positano and Amalfi, a boat day to Capri, a beach-club day near Nerano, and an inland trip to Pompeii and a Vesuvius winery.
How do you get to the Amalfi Coast?
Fly into Naples International Airport (NAP), then take a 60 to 90 minute transfer by car or private shuttle. Naples is the closest major airport and the easiest gateway.
When is the best time to visit?
Late May through September. June and September bring warm water and slightly thinner crowds. July and August are the hottest and busiest.
Can you travel the Amalfi Coast solo?
Yes. It's safe and easy to do solo, and a group trip makes it simple to meet people fast, usually within a couple of days.
